Technology Health and Safety - Initial Saw Courses 25/26

Target Audience:  Teachers and technicians employed in school workshops who require Initial Health and Safety Circular and Band Saw Training.

Technology and Design Teachers and Technicians must ensure that their machine training is up to date and a record of staff training must be kept by the Head of Technology and Design Department. It is important that teachers and/or technicians who intend using such machines are given access to appropriate training, assessment and certification in line with the Health and Safety Policy Statement. Boards of Governors, in discharging their statutory responsibilities, must ensure:

"that all employees have appropriate qualifications, experience and training to safely undertake their work and to continually develop and improve their competencies in order to carry out their work or activity in a safe and efficient manner.”
"that all employees have access to regular training within their discipline to undertake their work safely and to continually develop and improve their competencies in order to carry out their work or activity in a safe and efficient  manner." (Health and Safety Statement and Policy, September 2017).

This is a two day course, which should be refreshed every three years.

Course content includes:

relevant legislation health and safety advice recommended good practice hands on practical sessions

Substitute cover and travel costs cannot be provided by the Education Authority, participants are reminded to bring their own refreshments.

Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis.

Exploring SEND in the Primary Classroom - A professional learning day for ECTs

Target audience:  Primary Early Career Teachers ECTs registered with the EA for the academic year 2025-2026 will have received an access code to enable them to apply for this event.   About this event

This dedicated SEND day for Early Career Teachers offers a practical introduction to inclusive education within the primary setting.  Participants will explore effective strategies for creating inclusive classrooms, understand the principles underpinning inclusive education and develop confidence in supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN).  The day also focuses on meaningful target setting and review within Personal Learning Plans (PLPs), differentiation and accommodations for diverse learners, and the importance of collaboration with support staff and external agencies.

Aims

To equip ECTs with strategies to create an inclusive learning environment where every pupil feels valued and supported.  To promote the integration of diverse learners into the classroom community, fostering a sense of belonging and participation.  To provide ECTs with tools and techniques for setting meaningful and achievable targets within Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs).  Objectives Develop an understanding of inclusive education principles and their importance in promoting pupil success and well-being. Be familiar with effective differentiation strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs and styles within the classroom. Understand ways to celebrate and embrace diversity in the classroom, creating a culture of respect and acceptance. Understand the purpose and components of Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs), including setting SMART targets and monitoring progress. Time

Community of Lifesavers

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) TRAINING AND AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) AWARENESS- TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

In March 2022, legislation came into effect stating that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must be included in the minimum statutory content in Learning for Life and Work at Key Stage 3. CCEA has partnered with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), the Department of Education (DE) and the Education Authority to create the Community of Lifesavers Education Programme to support schools in meeting this requirement.

To continue to support schools deliver the statutory element of the Community of Lifesavers Education Programme, you are invited to attend one day of face-to-face training which will focus on the practical and essential CPR and AED lifesaving skills.   This TPL opportunity will be delivered by the NIAS in a range of venues across the province.  

This training is for:   

Teachers delivering CPD and AED awareness to pupils for the first time from September 2025 

OR 

Experienced teachers who have been delivering CPD and AED awareness to pupils for 2 years or more (those trained in 2022-2023, 2023-2024) who are eligible to have their training refreshed.

Guidance from the NIAS advises these lifesaving skills should be refreshed every 2 years, in line with current best practice for the train the trainer model.

Sub cover will be provided, and schools will be reimbursed after attendance (when booking a supply teacher on NISTR use code S - School Miscellaneous).

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

CLEAPSS H&S in Practical Science for Early Career Teachers

Target Audience:

Post-Primary Science Early Career Teachers Induction/EPD1/EPD2

Science teaching has a very good health and safety record. However, there are many hazardous chemicals, living organisms, and unfamiliar pieces of equipment and procedures in use in school laboratories. As well as knowing how to work safely, Early Career Teachers need to develop the skills needed to run a successful and safe practical lesson. As part of the course we will consider what this means and offer suggestions and tips based on CLEAPSS resources.

The objectives for this one-day, face-to-face course are to:

raise the awareness of health and safety matters affecting new science teachers fulfil, in part, the obligation on employers to provide health and safety training for new staff develop an understanding of risk assessment allow participants to share concerns about health and safety matters further develop skills and techniques for running a successful practical lesson

In compliance with Regulation 13(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000, the EA School Development Service will be offering one day health and safety training, provided by CLEAPSS, for ECTs in Northern Ireland.  Attendance at this course is a crucial factor in the mitigation of risk in school science and to reduce the likelihood of HSENI prosecutions against the EA, or your school, and any resultant civil actions arising out of accidents. 

This one-day, Face-to-Face course will de-bunk some of the myths surrounding what you can and cannot do in science lessons as well as exploring the legal requirements and duties placed on teachers and their employers. Activities in the lab that commonly give rise to problems will be highlighted and discussed, and there will be opportunities to discuss each participant’s own safety concerns.

On this course you will look at model risk assessments, such as Hazcards, and consider how these can be used to address problems presented by a particular activity, school, room or class. You will also look at the importance of adopting control measures, such as eye protection, and of sticking to agreed procedures. The session dealing with emergencies will look at Immediate Remedial Measures for personal injuries and other incidents.

There will be 4 sessions during the day:

Safety in school science Risk assessment and dealing with emergencies How to make the best use of CLEAPSS resources Dealing with issues raised by participants including learning from past accidents

Each workshop includes a number of activities such as presentations, discussion in groups, quizzes etc.

Format:

The programme will run as 2 full-day experiences hosted at each CLC, with one online catchup (attendance at all 3 sessions is a pre-requisite).

Each site will deliver the same structured programme to ensure consistency and quality across regions.  Book one of the three locations: AmmA Centre (Armagh), Nerve Belfast (W5) or Nerve Centre (Derry/Londonderry).

Introduction to Induction Core Day - ECT Professional Learning

Target audience:  Early Career Teachers completing Induction ECTs registered with the EA for the academic year 2025-2026 will have received an access code to enable them to apply for this event.   About this event

The Introduction to Induction Core Day is designed to introduce Early Career Teachers to the teaching profession in Northern Ireland, highlighting its unique characteristics, opportunities and challenges.  This event encourages participants to reflect on their personal values, aims and vision as emerging professionals, while building confidence in navigating their career journey through reflective practice.  ECTs will be familiarised with key resources and support systems available to them during their induction year.  The day also fosters a collaborative learning community where participants can share experiences and build meaningful professional connections.

Objectives

By the end of this session, Early Career Teachers will be able to:

Understand how their own unique vision for learners aligns with their values as a teacher and how it impacts in the classroom and on learners. 

Understand the key professional competences for teachers in Northern Ireland. 

Navigate the EA’s Induction website and be familiar with its supporting resources.
