AAIS Moving On Up : Transfer Training for Parents of Primary 7 Pupils

AIMS:

• To develop knowledge and understanding of the implications of the transfer process for pupils with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder

• To provide guidance in the completion of the Individual Pupil Profile for Year 7 pupils

• To provide a range of practical strategies to support the child in his/her transfer to the Post Primary Sector

AIMS:

- Develop knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of autism

- Explore practical strategies to be implemented in the post primary environment to support an autistic post-primary pupil

AAIS TIER 2 MODULE 1 Understanding Me for Parents and Carers of Post-Primary Pupils

AIMS:

- Build upon your knowledge and understanding, developed in Tier 1 training.

- Increase your knowledge, understanding and acceptance of autism from a neurodiverse perspective.

- Understand autism from the personal perspective of post-primary pupils.

- Understand the importance of a needs-led approach.

- Understand the importance of capitalising upon pupil strengths.

AAIS TIER 2 MODULE 2: Getting the Learning Environment Right! for Parents and Carers of Post-Primary Pupils

AIMS:

- Build upon your knowledge and understanding, developed in Tier 1 training and in Module 1

- Review the Special Educational Needs legislation and understand the importance of anticipatory measures and reasonable adjustments

- Develop a greater understanding of how the environment can impact on teaching and learning

- Develop a greater understanding of the importance of physical and visual structure to support learning.

AIMS:

- Build upon your knowledge and understanding, developed in Tier 1 training and in Tier 2 Modules 1 and 2

- Take a closer look at the social challenges associated with autism

- Investigate a range of visual, structured strategies which support social development

AAIS TIER 2 MODULE 4 Emotionally Speaking for Parents and Carers of Post-Primary Pupils

AIMS:

- Build upon your knowledge and understanding, developed in Tier 1 training and in Tier 2 Modules 1, 2 and 3.

- Consider the importance of self-regulation, emotional understanding and the triggers that may attribute to dysregulation, particularly in autistic pupils.

- Learn more about Dan Siegel's concept of 'The Window of Tolerance'

- Learn more about Maja Toudal's 'Energy Accounting' strategy

- Learn more about Tony Attwood's 'Emotional Toolbox'

- Develop a greater understanding of the Emotional Regulation Curve and how you can help in this process.

AIMS:

To become more aware of how children can communicate. To help respond to all attempts at communication. To provide a range of ideas and strategies to help develop communication skills.

Each series of stay and play consists of three sessions – one per week running across 3 consecutive weeks.

The purpose of the sessions are to create an environment where you and your child can come and engage in play activities with the support of highly trained and experienced staff.

Through the sessions we will explore the importance of play and will be available to give guidance on areas that you as parents/carers may need some support with e.g. toileting, language development, sharing or self help skills.

Audience - Nursery and Playgroup children and their parent/carer

Spaces are limited to 10 - if there are no slots available reserve places can be booked and you will be notified if a space becomes available. 

It is also preferable that parents are available for ALL 3 sessions

Overview of the Social, Behavioral and Emotional Wellbeing (SBEW) Chapter within the SEN Resource File

AIMS:

To outline the shift from managing behaviour to understanding and supporting children and young people experiencing SBEW needs
Provide guidance on establishing a whole school ethos firmly built on collective care, Trauma Informed Practice and the Principles of Nurture
To know and understand how developing proactive and collaborative approaches leads to an evolution in how support is provided to pupils experiencing SBEW needs

Course Details: Each individual member of staff attending must complete an individual registration. Registration for the first session in the course will automatically register the applicant for the subsequent sessions in the set.

PLEASE NOTE: This training takes place online using MS Teams on 2 separate days. Participants must attend BOTH dates in the applicable set of sessions. Links will be issued approximately one week prior to commencement of course.
