Solution Focused Approach to Supporting Social, Behavioural, Emotional & Wellbeing Needs

Aims:
This facilitative workshop aims to provide staff with a solution focussed approach to support children/ young people with a profile of Social, Behavioural, Emotional and Well-Being (SBEW) needs within a busy mainstream classroom.

C2k - SMS Pupil Movement Year 7 to Year 8 Overview 2025

C2k are offering CTF Year 7 to Year 8 online overview sessions for Primary Schools to outline the SIMS .net Pupil Movement process.

In accordance with DE requirements, Year 7 pupil records are sent electronically by Primary Schools to the relevant Post Primary or Special school.  This year the CTFs can only be sent from 20 May onwards to Post Primary/Special schools through the AnyComms App within the App Store. This process must be completed by 5 June 2023.

The overview is for members of staff who deal with pupil records in SIMS .net, most likely a member of the office staff and will be delivered using Microsoft Teams.

The aim of the session is to provide training and guidance in assigning Year 7 pupils leaving dates, destinations etc. and the process to transfer to Year 8.

AIM:

Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)

Child sexual exploitation (CSE) is a type of sexual abuse. It happens when a child or young person is coerced, manipulated or deceived into sexual activity in exchange for things that they may need or want like gifts, drugs, money, status and affection. Children and young people are often tricked into believing they're in a loving and consensual relationship so the sexual activity may appear consensual. This is called grooming and is a type of abuse. They may trust their abuser and not understand that they're being abused. CSE does not always involve physical contact, and can also occur through the use of technology.

Join us to understand CSE, and how to support a pupil and their parents/carers once it is known that CSE is suspected or confirmed.

This pre-recorded training explores the different types of neglect, with a focus on the impact of neglect on a child’s overall development. It provides participants with the knowledge and tools to recognise and respond to neglect, to develop a support plan for a child at risk of neglect, and signposts to practical ideas of how to engage parents in discussions about the impact of neglect. Power to Change. Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

The ‘Power to Change Campaign’ is part of the NI Strategy to End Violence Against Woman and Girls (VAWG). The campaign was launched by the PSNI in January 2025 in collaboration with the Department of Justice and the Executive Office.  The recorded webinar and the learning resources provided for use with staff and young people are designed to fit in with the preventative curriculum.  The aim of the campaign is to invite and encourage all men and boys to check and change their attitudes, beliefs and behaviours towards women and girls; to challenge their peers, and to have the confidence to step in safely to put a stop to behaviour that might put their friends at risk of offending. The campaign also hopes to instigate conversations about the influence of social media – and help to educate about the powerful algorithms that are behind the pushed microdoses of misogynistic and harmful messaging.

The webinar was hosted on MS Teams and introduced by Therese Moran (CPSS).  It is delivered by Lindsay Fisher (PSNI Detective Superintendent and  PSNI lead for the campaign), with an input from Jane McCarthy from The Executive Office.

Leadership Training Programme: Addressing Bullying in Schools

Overview

This comprehensive professional development programme is designed for Pastoral Leads, Social, Behavioural and Emotional Wellbeing (SBEW) leads, Safeguarding Leads and SENCOs/Learning Support Coordinators. It equips school leaders with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to implement a whole-school, evidence-based approach to prevent and address bullying-type behaviour.

Programme Aim

To ensure every pupil in the region attends a school where staff are trained to deliver a supportive and effective Addressing Bullying in Schools policy and practice.

Programme Purpose

To empower school leaders to:

Align with statutory requirements and embed best practice. Implement a whole-school approach grounded in research and evidence. Connect legislation, baseline assessment, systems and processes, preventative strategies, effective responses, stakeholder engagement, communication, and policy development.

Programme Structure

Technology Health and Safety - Initial Saw Courses 25/26

Target Audience:  Teachers and technicians employed in school workshops who require Initial Health and Safety Circular and Band Saw Training.

Technology and Design Teachers and Technicians must ensure that their machine training is up to date and a record of staff training must be kept by the Head of Technology and Design Department. It is important that teachers and/or technicians who intend using such machines are given access to appropriate training, assessment and certification in line with the Health and Safety Policy Statement. Boards of Governors, in discharging their statutory responsibilities, must ensure:

"that all employees have appropriate qualifications, experience and training to safely undertake their work and to continually develop and improve their competencies in order to carry out their work or activity in a safe and efficient manner.”
"that all employees have access to regular training within their discipline to undertake their work safely and to continually develop and improve their competencies in order to carry out their work or activity in a safe and efficient  manner." (Health and Safety Statement and Policy, September 2017).

This is a two day course, which should be refreshed every three years.

Course content includes:

relevant legislation health and safety advice recommended good practice hands on practical sessions

Substitute cover and travel costs cannot be provided by the Education Authority, participants are reminded to bring their own refreshments.

This training is suitable for post-primary school staff who work directly with children, young people and families. It is particularly useful for SENCOs, those who work in a pastoral care role and any member of staff responsible for supporting attendance.

The training will be delivered across two sessions as follows:

Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA): Engaging with Entrenched EBSNA, Learning from Motivational Interviewing

This workshop provides a practical follow up to the initial training courses on Emotional Based School Non Attendance (EBSNA) developed by the Educational Psychology Service for primary and post-primary school staff. The workshop is particularly useful for SENCOs and/or those staff responsible for supporting attendance.

Attendees will further their learning regarding using techniques from Motivational Interviewing, to support them towards having more effective conversations with CYP experiencing EBSNA. The workshop will include a mix of theory, practical techniques, demonstrated role plays and videos.

This session aims to:

Raise awareness of the principles of Motivational Interviewing and introduce another way of working with complex EBSNA. Introduce the cycle of change in relation to EBSNA and consider the importance of a child’s readiness for change. Offer staff practical experience in using MI reflective listening techniques and support them to apply these in their work with children experiencing EBSNA.

The workshops will take place on the following dates:

The effects of a critical incident on pupils, staff and communities can be wide-ranging and when a school is affected all staff have an important role to play. This professional learning will also provide insight into the role of the EA Critical Incident Response Team.

The Bereavement and Loss professional learning course is for School Staff and is designed to equip educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to support children and young people experiencing loss. This program will enhance participants' understanding of grief, develop their ability to provide effective support, and increase their confidence in handling the complexities of grief and provide compassionate support to those in need.

First Aid at Work Training (3 Day)

Three day First Aid at Work course

Staff members who successfully complete this course will be recognised as a First-aider. 

This course will cover:

Administering First Aid to a casualty who is unconscious, wounded and bleeding, choking, suffering from shock, minor injuries and also administering CPR. Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries; chest injuries; burns and scalds; eye injuries; anaphylactic shock; sudden poisoning and recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid.

Candidates must attend and complete all aspects of the course to qualify for certification.

First Aid at Work Refresher (2 Day)

Two day refresher course

This course is for staff members who hold a current First Aid at Work certificate and need to refresh their skills. Skills must be refreshed every three years. Holders of this certificate can refresh their skills three months prior to their certificate expiry date or up to twenty eight days after their certificate expires. The full three day course must be retaken if the refresher course is not successfully completed within this time period.

A copy of the applicant’s current First-Aid certificate must be uploaded at the time of booking.   

Candidates must attend both days and successfully complete all aspects of the course to qualify for recertification.

Cancellations must be made in writing at least 7 days before the course date or the full course fee will still be charged.

Developing Early Attention​ and Listening Skills

This professional learning course on developing early attention and listening skills, has been written and produced collaboratively by RISE NI, SENIS MLD, SEN EYIS, the School Improvement Service and the Language and Communication Service.

Post-Primary and Special Self-evaluation and Planning for Improvement - Making it Meaningful, Manageable and Impactful

The aim of this programme is to deepen your understanding of school development planning as a process, underpinned by the school’s strong guiding vision and purpose, informed by rigorous self-evaluation and educational research, devised in consultation with stakeholders and in compliance with DE policy.

Participants will attend 2 x ½ day face-to-face workshops facilitated by school improvement officers, in which they will be invited to explore themes relevant to self-evaluation and planning for improvement, considering how they can be applied in the context of their school.

The core themes covered in the workshops are designed around a series of questions as follows:

1. Rationale – asks why do we need a school development plan and what needs to be in one?

2. Self-evaluation – asks how do we develop a robust evidence-base of all aspects of school life, upon which to build a manageable, meaningful school development plan which positively impacts on our pupils and their outcomes?

3. Prioritisation – asks what are the challenges and opportunities we face and what are our emerging priorities over the next 3 years?

4. Planning for Improvement – asks what are the characteristics of effective planning for improvement?

Each workshop will provide opportunities for professional dialogue and the sharing of practice, approaches and resources that can be used by schools to enhance their existing self-evaluation and improvement planning processes and structures. These sessions are intended as a starting point for participants to consider exploring and developing one or more of the above themes in more detail, which they may wish to pursue with their designated School Improvement Professional. This professional learning will lead to an increased understanding of the curriculum requirements surrounding ICT in the Nursery Setting. Practitioners will have an increased awareness of the CCEA Digital Skills in the Northern Ireland Curriculum and the ETI Empowering Improvement Framework Core Contributory Area of Digital Skills. It will showcase a range of tools/platforms which can be used to enhance teaching and learning within the Nursery setting. There will also be signposting towards professional learning opportunities to support staff skills development. A number of case studies demonstrating good practice within the area of ICT will be shared to promote self-reflection and school improvement.

Physical Development and Movement in the Nursery Setting

Aims

To increase knowledge and understanding of the curriculum requirements of Physical Development and Movement. To support the development of children's physical skills through indoor and outdoor play. To provide opportunities for self-reflection through the sharing of good practice from case studies.

Programme Content

This professional learning will lead to increased understanding of the curriculum requirements surrounding Physical Development and Movement in the Nursery Setting. Practitioners will gain an increased awareness of supporting pupils' physical skills development, leading to improved health and well-being and readiness for learning. Practitioners will be signposted to relevant research and resources to enable them to enhance provision. A number of case studies demonstrating good practice within the area of Physical Development and Movement will be shared to promote self-reflection and school improvement.

Developing the Teaching and Learning of Mathematical Word Problems

Aims

To identify possible challenges in the teaching and learning of mathematical word problems and how to overcome them. To explore a variety of approaches and strategies which support children to solve mathematical word problems. To provide a range of resources to support the teaching and learning of mathematical word problems.

Programme Content

This PL opportunity will be an online webinar which will build on ‘in person’ training provided on ‘Enriching Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving’ in-person professional learning in 2024/25. The webinar will be offered on three occasions during the August SD Days.

Using Manipulatives to develop Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics

Aims

To explore a range of physical and virtual manipulatives which support children in developing conceptual understanding in Mathematics. To consider a range of ideas for using manipulatives effectively to enhance children’s understanding and learning experiences.

Programme Content

This PL opportunity will be a full day ‘in person’ event offered on two days in each locality in different venues. Participants will engage in a wide variety of practical activities in using a range of manipulatives such as cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, digit cards, counters, Numicon, dominoes, etc. to develop conceptual understanding based on current research. Opportunities to explore virtual manipulatives will also be provided.

Building Synergy - Session 1: An Introduction to Community Use of Schools (CUOS)

These sessions are suitable for Principals and staff with remit for community links.

AIMS:

This two-session series offers schools an opportunity to explore how CUOS can impact children’s learning and school improvement.

After completion of the two sessions schools will be given access to an online portal of information, resources, case studies and a network of contacts to enable them to apply the learning from the sessions.

STRUCTURE/CONTENT:

This session will explore the nature of CUOS: Community Sharing, Curriculum Enrichment, Community Partnership & Community Planning.

This Professional Learning & Development Programme aims to provide staff from Specialist Provisions  with guidance on how to set up an Post Primary Specialist Provision classroom and support them to meet the needs of each individual pupil.

Approach:
Course participants will learn through a delivered presentation, interactive discussions, and experiencing a simulated learning environment. Electronic resources will be available on completion of training.
 
Course Structure/Content:

This session outlines three important areas for Specialist Provsion staff to consider when setting up their classroom.

1.  Physical Structure. 
2. Visual Timetables. 
3. Activity Systems. 

Each of these areas are covered in detail with real-life examples. 

SPS staff will model their use, followed by supporting discussion about how they can be adapted to suit your own individual classroom environment.

Provide an overview of the structure & role of the Local Impact Team​ Consider the supports available prior to and after making a Request for Involvement as part of a child/young person’s graduated response journey​ Explore the information and evidence needed when making a Request for Involvement ​

Professional Development for Classroom Assistants and Support Staff in Pre-School Settings to Support Children with Severe and Complex Learning Needs

Expression of Interest

To increase confidence in support staff to assist the learning and development of children presenting with complex needs in mainstream settings. This course is face to face delivered by SEND Early Years Service. It will be delivered over 6 sessions and will focus on the practical aspects of working with children with severe and complex SEN.

1. An overview of the role of the Support Assistant and the importance of forming positive relationships and interactions with children.

2. An overview of Stages of Development taking cognisance of the profile of a child with severe learning difficulties and relating this to pre-school play based learning.

3. An understanding of the inclusive environment to promote interaction, communication and learning.

4. An exploration of the importance of sensory systems in self-regulation and regulating emotions.

5. An overview of observation techniques and the use/purpose of baselines and checklists to inform practice.

6. Practical experiences in applying specific strategies and resources to a range of case studies.

Course Duration:

· Modules will be 1 ½ - 2 hours over 6 sessions.

Target Audience

· Support staff in pre-school settings.

Location:

This course aims to understand:

What is metacognition​ What research tells us about using manipulatives What are some of the manipulatives which can be in a numeracy toolkit, and ​how can they be of use

Facilitating Inclusion for Pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties in Key Stage 1

Aims:

Provide an overview of the profile of a child with Moderate Learning Difficulties in KS1; Discuss the importance of skills such as; Memory and Attention and Listening in KS1; Discuss Literacy and Numeracy barriers to a pupil with Moderate Learning Difficulties in KS1; Discuss social interaction and best practice in supporting pupils with these skills; Support participants with target-setting for KS1 pupils in Literacy and Numeracy; Evaluate the use of Assessments for pupils in KS1.

Aims:

Aims:

A session tailored to give an overview of factors which impact behaviour in children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and appropriate strategies to support them.

This session has been specifically developed to support the following;

To gain an understanding of how our behaviour and relationships impact the behaviour of our pupils with SLD To gain an overview of factors which impact behaviour, and the function of challenging behaviour in children and young people with SLD To gain an understanding of how to analyse and address behaviour using ABC (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence) To gain knowledge of preventative strategies to implement within a school setting to promote positive behaviour for pupils

To highlight some of the characteristic difficulties young people with Down Syndrome have in relation to learning.
