Supporting Autistic Children and Young People with Severe Learning Difficulties

Aims: 

This Professional Learning & Development Programme aims to provide staff from Specialist Provisions with strategies and resources to support Autistic pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties within the classroom setting. 

Structure/Content:

This session has been specifically structured to support the following:

1. To provide an overview of Autism and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD).​

2. To provide strategies and resources to support autistic children with SLD within a specialist setting.​

3. To explore the physical needs and sensory processing of autistic children with  SLD.​

4. To highlight the importance of the Fundamentals of communications for autistic children with SLD​.

5. To consider the role of play for the social development of autistic children with SLD​.

6. To highlight the importance of healthy emotional wellbeing for autistic children with SLD​.

7. To explore ways to use the environment to support autistic children with SLD

Connecting & Caring Across the Whole School Community​

Aims: 

This Professional Learning & Development training is for Specialist Provisions in Mainstream Schools only. The focus of this training is to build staff confidence in responding effectively to a range of needs, particularly in relation to complex social, behavioural, emotional and wellbeing needs. 

Structure/Content:

Connecting and Caring Training Consists of 3 Modules:

Module 1: Online Pre attendance activities

1.1 Legislation and context

1.2 Foundations of Social Behaviour and Emotional Wellbeing Practice

Module 2: Face-to-face session

2. Practical strategies to PREVENT, RELATE, SUPPORT & RESPOND

A practical workshop allowing staff the opportunity to go through case studies and actively problem-solve scenarios and devise appropriate plans/ risk assessments where there are identified behaviours of concern. 

Module 3: Post attendance activities

3.1 Intervention Processes

3.2 Evaluation and self-reflection

Using Playdough to Support Learning in a Post Primary Specialist Provision

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ONLY

Training Aim: 

This Professional Learning & Development Programme aims to outline how to support and develop language and fine motor skills through the use of play dough within a Specialist Provision and outline further support available from the SPS.

Course Structure/Content:

This session has been specifically structured to support the following:

 1. Develop an understanding of how playdough can be used to enhance learning, including use in STEM subjects.

 2. Develop an understanding of how playdough can promote sensory wellbeing of post primary pupils.

 3. Explore how playdough can be used to support friendships.

 4. Provide setting staff with visual resources to support a play dough session.

3.00pm - 3.45pm
